Crystal's World (webcomic, 2012-14)
crystal's world is a dystopian sci-fi comic that ran from 2012-2014 while the author was in middle school in southeast alaska. i'm excited to present this story on it's 10 year anniversary not because it's profound, high quality, or even "holds up," but because it's a fascinating artifact speculative fiction undertaken by a child entering their political awakening to systems of oppression. you can watch my perspective change alongside my art. i wrote this hamfisted little story about suffering cityscapes, complex geographies of trauma, and invisible communities--themes that continue to shape my art--from a tiny, remote community in the rainforest of southeast alaska.
over the years, crystal's world transformed into hello, reykjavik and rapture before i decided that this story has to be grounded in my own political context as an american settler from the pacific northwest and alaska. apocalypse story is the current form of this project which has come to rest on the idea of messy queer communities building resilience against climate change, against post-apocalyptic coloniality, and against the military-medical-industrial complex that owns our bodies.
